AN OLD FORGOTTEN HERO

It was almost 24 years ago on( September 5 1986 ) when the pan am flight 73 was hijacked in Karachi, Pakistan. At that time lives were saved. And passengers were killed. Heroes were made. And heroes were killed.
The plane was on a stop over in Karachi from Bombay heading to Frankfurt and continuing to JFK(new york). The plane was raided by four armed terrorist while the plane was in the airport.

On board were 360 passenger including Americans and Mexicans. As the hijacker raided the plane an Indian flight attendant named neerja bhanot did what most hesitated to do. .....

Despite being tackled she helped the Captain, First officer and the flight engineer escape the plane by the over head hatch in the cock pit.... Her heroic efforts made the hijacker stranded on the ground .. Making the terrorist sitting ducks. As the terrorists got impatient and frustrated they asked for the passports of every body on the plane so that they could differentiate between the nationalities of the passenger. As a randomly chosen passports (USA citizens)owner would be killed if their demand would not meet as they needed a new flight crew to fly the stranded plane.

As 17 hours had passed , one passenger was assassinated in the plane. As time passed by, the situations to the passenger began to seem hopeless. The flight attendant Neerja Bhanot managed to do what many couldn't.
She hid the passports so that the hijackers would not differentiate the American citizens from the non American citizen. As the hijackers got frustrated , she got more and more ambitious. She then switched off the lights of the cabin and open the door and the shoots were deployed so the passengers could escape..... Hence, the hijackers lost all control . The open fire in the cabin killed 20 people. As this happened she laid down her life and shielded a couple of helpless passengers in order to help them which lead to her death. She was awarded the flight safety foundation award and many others after her death. Her heroism was and still is breath taking. She died just 2 days before her 23rd birthday. She had been in an arranged marriage when she was young. Sadly , it had ended and she was forced to return back to her parents. She join Pan Am as a senior Flight Attendant.Who died as a senior flight attendant. The thing that lead me to write a blog about her was that she a a forgotten hero. there are no signs about her on You Tube.. Not much in Google.
They just gave a very brief description of her. This act of heroism Saved a number of lives. And maybe a huge disaster like the Pan am 103 in Lockerbie .

Its sad to see this all happen but

In one way or another She still won!
